"Iloveyoumorethanyesterdayandlessthantomorrow".WhenIreadthesewordsforthefirsttime,Ismiledandrepeatedthemtomyself.AndIsmiledagainandmadesureIwouldnotforgetthem.Thatistheeffectofwords.Andbecausewordsdonotmovenorrunaway,wecanpauseandlookatthemandrepeatthemtoourselves.Wecanenjoythemmore—muchmorethan,say,thetelevisionorthecinemawhenthefilmcarriesonandwemissthemomentstoreflecton.
Ifyoulovewords,youwillloveEnglishwordsandyouwilllovepoetry—beautifulpoetryoflove.IrememberlearningbyheartagreatdealofpoetryandShakespearebeforeIeverunderstoodthemproperly.Buttheirsoundswerewonderful.AndIknewIwasreadingsomethingwonderful.Onoccasions,IwouldcomeacrossapoemIwouldunderstand.Thosewouldbecomemyserendipities.AndIwouldreadthewordsagain,andagain,andagain.WordsthatweresobeautifulthatIsimplywantedtocommitthemtomymemory.
Iwasjustl5whenIwenttoEnglishboardingschool—scaredstiffthatIcouldnotspeakEnglishwithalltheotherboys,andfrightenedtodeaththatIwouldbebullied.ButwhenIcameacrosspoetry,allwasforgotten,andIfeltalmostasifIhadfoundthesecretwithwhichtoprotectmyself—knowledgethatcouldnotbescared,norbullied,norstolen,nortakenaway.Iwouldurgeyoutoreadthesewordsagainandagain,andmemorizethem:
HadItheheavens'embroideredcloths,
Enwroughtwithgoldenandsilverlight,
Theblueandthedimandthedarkcloths
