Pass（經過）的過去式是past還是passed？Hepassedtheexam（他考試及格）和Thebuspastthroughthetunnel（巴士穿過隧道）這兩句，為甚麼一用passed，一用past？
原因是第二句錯了。Pass只有一個過去式寫法：passed。Past是名詞、副詞（adverb）、介系詞（preposition）和形容詞（adjective），例如：（1）Thestormpassed（暴風過去了）。（2）Sheseemedtoliveentirelyinthepast（她似乎完全活在過去之中）。（3）Hestalkedpast,lookingatnoone（他昂然走過，誰都不看一眼）。（4）Itispastmidnight（已經過了午夜）。（5）Shehasbeenabitundertheweatherforthepastfewdays（過去幾天她有點不舒服）。
以下一句可用動詞pass或副詞past，意思沒有分別，但當可顯示兩字用法的不同：Theopeningwastoosmallforthecartopass/togopast（那個缺口太小，汽車無法通過）。
至於「巴士穿過隧道」，英文是Thebuswentthroughthetunnel，不要說pastthrough。
要說「我們是母親養育的」，英文是Weareraisedbyourmother還是mothers？
假如「我們」的母親是同一人，那當然應說mother；假如說各人自己的母親，那就應說mothers，以免誤會。有時，各人都有一件的東西也可用單數形式表達，例如：Theyallarmedthemselveswithagun/withguns（他們都拿了槍）。不過，用複數形式的guns還是比單數的agun自然。
