威廉．曼殊菲爾一七五六至一七八八年任英國王座法庭首席法官，有一次審理一宗所謂巫術案，案中老婦據說曾經凌虛而行。他仔細聆聽各種證詞之後，打發被告婦人離去。
他解釋說：「我想，這位善良女人應獲准回家。至於回家路上，她是腳踏實地還是凌虛而行，悉從她尊便，因為兩者都不違反英國法律。」
【解說】中世紀歐洲人相信世上有女巫，被控為「女巫」者往往燒死。十五世紀聖女貞德率領法國國民抗英，被英軍拘捕，即以「女巫」罪名燒死。直到十八世紀，英美還有處死「女巫」陋俗。搜捕女巫行動，英文叫witchhunt。現在這個詞常用來指當權者搜捕異己，例如：TheChinesecommunistshavelaunchedawitchhuntagainstFalunGong（中國共產黨對法輪信徒展開搜捕）。
