TheexpectedconflictbetweentheUnitedStatesandSpaindidnotimmediatelymaterialise,however,andRemingtoncabledHearst:Shouldhereturnhome?Hearstpromptlycabledback:"Pleaseremain.Youfurnishthepictures,andI'llfurnishthewar."
一八九八年二月，古巴一場反西班牙殖民政府的變亂大致已告平息。當時美國戰艦緬因號停泊哈瓦那海港，突然爆炸。美國群情鼎沸，未有證據即歸咎西班牙人；報紙出版商威廉．倫道夫．赫斯特隨即派遣畫家弗雷德利克．雷明頓赴古巴，因為他擅長描繪戰爭。
大眾預期的美國與西班牙之戰沒有立即爆發。雷明頓打電報給赫斯特：他要不要返回美國？赫斯特馬上回電報說：「請留下來。你負責畫畫，我負責挑起戰爭。」
【解說】緬因號爆炸的原因，至今未明，但當時美國的低級報刊不惜弄虛作假煽動民情，終於挑起戰爭。這類專事聳人聽聞的報刊，英文叫yellowpress，而這種辦報手段則叫yellowjournalism，和現代中文所謂「黃色報刊」意思截然不同。
