In1014theByzantineemperorBasilⅡdefeatedtheBulgararmyandtook14000prisoners.HedecidedtoputanendtoBulgarresistancebyburdeningtheBulgarstatewithhelplessmen.Heorderedthattheprisonersshouldbedividedintogroupsofahundred,andthatninety-nineofthemshouldbeblinded,whilethefortunatehundredthwastolosejustoneeyesothathecouldleadtheothershome.
Thegrislyprocesscompleted,thecolumnsofblindmensetoffthroughthemountains,eachmanholdingontothebeltofthemaninfront.Howmanywerelostonthereturnjourneywedonotknow,butwhatiscertainisthatwhenthesurvivorsreachedtheBulgarcapital,TsarSamuelfelldowninafitatthesightanddiedwithintwodays.
