On1July1916,atthestartofthebattleoftheSomme,CaptainWilfredNevillofthe8thEastSurreysusedtheBritishloveoffootballtoinspirehismen.Hegaveeachofhisfourplatoonsafootball,andofferedaprizetothefirstoftheplatoonsthatmanagedtokicktheirballintotheGermantrenches.Theideawasadoptedenthusiasticallybyhismen,andoneplatooneveninscribedtheirballwiththismessage:"TheGreatEuropeanCup.TheFinal.EastSurreysvBavarians."Wewillneverknowwhichoftheplatoonswonthegame,norwasNevilleverabletopresenthisprizetothewinners:hewaskilled,shortlyafterkickingoffforoneoftheplatoons.
一九一六年七月一日宋姆河之役伊始，東薩里第八營上尉威佛．內維爾以英國人熱愛足球的風俗，鼓舞將士，向手下四排士兵分贈四個足球，說率先把足球踢進德軍戰壕的一排，將會獲獎。四排將士都踴躍接納了這建議，有一排甚至在足球上寫道：「大歐洲盃決賽。英國東薩里對德國巴伐利亞。」最後哪一排士兵獲勝，不會有人知道。內維爾也沒有向獲勝者頒獎：他為一排士兵開球之後，不久就殞命沙場。
