Inthe18thcentury,theBritishonceattackedbynightaSpanishfortontheMosquitoCoast.Asailor,whohadscrambledoverthewalls,becameintheconfusionseparatedfromthemainbodyoftheassailants.Hehadprovidedhimselfwithtwocutlasses,oneineachhand,and,thusarmed,metaSpanishofficer,who,suddenlyrousedfromsleep,hadrushedoutunarmed.Thebravesailorwithouthesitationpresentedhisopponentwithoneofthecutlasses,observingthathescornedtotakeanyadvantageofanenemy.TheSpaniard,amazedatthiselevationofmind,yieldedhimselftohisfoe.

【解說】上述故事，出自一七六九年十二月十八日《倫敦公報》（LondonGazette），沒有記載那水兵姓氏，只是說他因此獲擢升。不過，幾年之後，他醉酒怒打同船少尉，被軍事法庭判處死刑。
