一九三○年代，希臘獨裁者邁塔克薩斯將軍非常不得民心，百姓喜歡見他出醜。有一次，他巡視空軍基地，獲邀試試新的水上飛機，於是欣然駕機稍事飛行，回頭準備在跑道着陸，指揮塔忽然傳來基地司令的聲音：「將軍，飛機降落海上會好一點。這是一架水上飛機。」邁塔克薩斯最後一分鐘及時扭轉飛機去勢，在上空繞一個圈，然後安然降落水上，關上飛機引擎，以無線電向指揮塔致謝：「指揮官，謝謝你，否則我要鬧笑話了。」他打開機門，一腳踏進海水裏。
【解說】Fauxpas本是法文，等於falsestep（錯誤一步），引伸解作「失言」、「失禮」，讀作[fou'pa:]，沒有s音，複數形式仍是fauxpas，但讀作[fou'pa:z]。Sheblushedcrimsonformakingafauxpas即「她因失禮，漲紅了臉」。
