TheWarsofReligioninFrance,arisingoutofthestruggleoftheFrenchProtestantsforreligiousliberty,wereremarkablefortheirunparalleledruthlessness,asmaybeseeninthepacificationofGuyennebyMontluc,aroyalistgeneral,in1562.MontluchadwonMontsegurbystorm,anditscommanderhadbeentakenalive.Thelatterwasamanofvalour,andinapreviouscampaignhadbeenMontluc'sfellowsoldierandfriend.Forthatreasonmanyintercededforhislife,butMontlucdecidedtohanghim,andsimplyonaccountofhisvalour.“Iknewhimtobevaliant,butthatmademetheratherputhimtodeath,”hesaidafterwards.
法國的基督新教徒爭取宗教自由，引起了法國的宗教戰爭，其間戰事冷酷無倫，保王將領蒙呂克一五六二年平定吉恩內之戰可見一斑。蒙呂克揮兵猛攻奪下蒙塞戈爾堡，活捉守軍統帥。這位統帥十分勇武，曾在一次戰役之中和蒙呂克同袍，有朋友之義，因此，不少人為他說情，請免一死。但蒙呂克判他絞刑，原因正是他驍勇善戰。蒙呂克事後說：「我知道他很勇敢，所以更要把他處死。」
【解說】法國宗教戰爭一五六二年爆發；一五九八年，法王亨利第四下詔賦予新教徒宗教自由，戰火始滅。Valour是「勇武」，形容詞是valiant或valorous，但valorous較為少用，例如：Hemadeavaliant/valorousattempttosavethewoman（他奮勇拯救那女人）。Valour和bravery的分別，在於bravery是一般用語，valour則強調困苦中的勇敢，多帶褒義。
