一九四一至一九四四年列寧格勒圍城戰期間，戈爾巴堅科中尉和德國一名狙擊兵決鬥，向對手開了一槍，只見敵方戰壕裏舉起鏟子，左右揮舞，表示沒有打中。戈爾巴堅科想看清楚一點，但他的頭一動，就聽見槍聲一響，一顆子彈呼嘯着在他耳邊飛過。他連忙找來一把鏟子，向那德國人揮舞。這場比賽延續了幾小時，雙方都用鏟子表示未有命中。最後，戈爾巴堅科智取對手。他不舞動鏟子，實行裝死。那德國人等了一會兒，探頭出戰壕想看清楚，被戈爾巴堅科一槍射穿了頭顱。
