一九一四年，英國的沃爾特．洛林上校在伊普爾戰役之中對德軍寸步不讓。他騎着白馬率軍沿梅寧路推進，一顆子彈把他一隻腳打得血肉模糊。軍醫叫他退到後面，他卻叫軍醫「去死吧」，要僕人把拖鞋拿來。他穿上拖鞋，再跨上白馬，不料白馬中槍，墮下馬來。他於是改騎一匹紅棕馬，但走不多遠，那匹馬也被射死，惟有拄着手杖一拐一拐的繼續領軍，死在途中，死前還鼓勵手下奮勇向前。
【解說】伊普爾位在比利時西北，一九一四年第一次世界大戰爆發，敵對雙方在這裏爭持激烈，死傷枕藉。
Charger是戰馬。Charge有「衝鋒」、「猛攻」的意思，例如：Ourtroopschargedtheenemy（我們的部隊向敵人衝去）。衝鋒的戰馬，自然就叫charger。紅棕色的馬叫bay，栗色的叫chestnut，不可混淆。
