50年前，（美國人）羅納德．赫里克創造了醫學歷史。他給患了慢性腎炎而垂死的孿生兄弟理查德捐了一個腎，是首個成功的器官移植手術。1954年12月23日的那次手術，不但讓理查德多活8年，更帶來日後千千萬萬個腎臟移植，以至其他器官如心臟、肝臟的移植手術。赫里克的醫生約瑟夫．默里在1990年獲頒諾貝爾獎。
