DuringthesiegeofLeningradin1941-44,theRussiandefenderswerereducedtolivingatalevelhardlybetterthananimals.Cannibalismbecamearealityratherthanjustapossibility.PattiesmadefrommincedhumanfleshwereonsaleattheLeningradHaymarket.Manybodiesbroughttothefrozencemeteriesforburialwerefoundtohavethefleshypartsremovedfromupperarms,thighsandbuttocks.Sometimesonlytheheadswereleftbehind.Sovietauthoritieswereabsolutelysilentaboutthisaspectofthesiege.
一九四一至四四年列寧格勒圍城戰期間，守城俄國軍民的生活水準低得幾乎和動物無異。人吃人不只是可能，而且是事實。列寧格勒秣市場上出售的小餡餅，就是以碎人肉作餡。不少屍體送到冰封的墓地前，雙臂、大腿、臀部肌肉都已削去，有時只剩下頭顱。蘇聯當局對圍城戰的這一面隻字不提。
【解說】列寧格勒一九四一年九月至四四年一月遭德軍圍攻，死亡人數將近百萬，獲蘇共封為「英雄城市」（HeroCity）。英雄在共產國家特別多，性命也特別便宜。
上面那段英文有兩個字可以談談：reduce和cannibal。Reduce是「減少」，引伸其義，就是「使淪落」或「貶低」，例如：Theoncewealthyfamilyisnowreducedtopoverty（那個家庭曾經很富有，但現在已淪為貧家）。Cannibal是「吃人肉的人」或「吃同類果腹的動物」，例如：Theshipwreckedsailorshadtobecomecannibalstostayalive（遇上船難的水手為了活下去，只有吃人）。
