Meaning和connotation二字意思有甚麼分別？
這位讀者說的meaning，改作denotation會好一點。Denotation和connotation都是指字義（meaning），但denotation是「字面意思」，connotation則是某字「令人聯想到的意思」。例如white字面意思是「白色」，卻往往令人聯想到「純潔」；mother字面意思是「母親」，卻會使人聯想到「慈愛」、「溫暖」：Whitedenotes"thecolourofsnowormilk",butitoftenconnotes"purity";motherhasthedenotativemeaningof"afemaleparent",butitcarriestheconnotationof"love"and"warmth"。
寫作時，必須注意所用字的connotation。比如說，resolute、strong-willed、stubborn三字，字面意思都是「倔強」，但resolute常有嘉許含義，可譯作「堅決」；strong-willed有時帶批評意思，可譯作「剛愎」；stubborn一般都有貶義，可譯作「頑固」。Thegovernmentremainsresoluteinitseffortstocombatracialdiscrimination（政府堅決掃除種族歧視）、Heremainsstubborninhisoppositiontosexualequality（他反對男女平等，態度頑固）這兩句，resolute、stubborn二字就不可互易。
美國總統甘迺迪曾說：Letusnevernegotiateoutoffear.Butletusneverfeartonegotiate（我們絕對不可因害怕而談判，但害怕談判也絕對不可）。Bargain（討價還價）和negotiate（談判）的denotation相同，但甘迺迪這句話改用bargain一字即不像樣，原因在於兩字不同的connotation。
