一八八四年美國總統競選期間，共和黨候選人的支持者發覺，民主黨候選人格羅弗．克利夫蘭雖然未婚，卻和一位動人的寡婦生了個兒子。他們馬上派發傳單，上面畫了個嬰兒，題為「克利夫蘭添了一張選票」，並安排遊行者歌唱：「爸爸哪裏去了，媽媽？去了白宮，哈哈哈！」這一着收了反效果。克利夫蘭很聰明，決定直認不諱，憑坦白贏了人心──也贏了選舉。
【解說】上述共和黨徒的活動，是典型的muckraking。Muck指牛馬等的糞，常用作肥料；rake是「耙」。尋覓醜聞，就如耙糞尋找東西，例如：Ibelievemuckrakingjournalistsaredoingsocietyaservicesincetheyenableustoknowthepoliticiansbetter（我認為，揭發醜聞的記者有助我們了解政壇人物，是對社會有貢獻的）。
「抹黑行動」則叫做smearcampaign。Smear即「塗抹」，例如：Hewassobadlysmearedthathelosttheelection（他受到嚴重抹黑，終於輸了選舉）。
