InApril1943,theUSSO'BannonspottedaJapanesesubmarineonpatrolofftheSolomonIslands.TheAmericancrewshotoffthesub'sconningtower,preventingitfromdiving,butthesubquicklyclosedinsothattheO'Bannon'sbiggunscouldnothitit.WhentheJapanesesailorscametopsidetofight,theO'Bannon'sunpreparedcrewmenhammeredthemwith─potatoes.Thinkingthattheyweregrenades,theJapanesepanicked,droppedtheirguns,triedtosubmergethesub,andsankintooblivion.
一九四三年四月，在所羅門群島附近，美國船奧班農號發現一艘日本潛艇在巡邏，開火轟掉潛艇的瞭望塔，使它不能潛航。但潛艇迅速逼近，奧班農號的大砲即無法向它射擊。潛艇上的水兵走到甲板上，只待廝殺；奧班農號船員未有準備，奮起擊敵，紛紛擲出──馬鈴薯。日本水兵以為是手榴彈，慌張失措，拋下槍就要把潛水艇潛入水裏，終於沉進了萬古的寂滅之中。
【解說】Oblivion是「湮沒」或「被完全忘卻」的情況，sink/pass/fallintooblivion是說「為世人忘卻」，例如：（1）Heisawriterfallenintooblivion（他是一個讀者已經遺忘的作家）。（2）Hiswritingshavesunkintooblivion（他的著作已湮沒無聞）。上文說那日本潛艇sankintooblivion，當然是指人艇一起滅亡。
Oblivion也可指「對周圍事物毫不留意」的狀況，例如：Hestoodthereintotaloblivion（他心不在焉的站着）。
