四月十二日，貴欄有Demosthenes,Athenianstatesmanwholabouredtoimprovehisskillsatoratory,wouldrepeattohimselfanylengthyspeechheheard（雅典政治家狄摩西尼努力改善其演說技巧，聽到長篇講辭，會依樣試講）一語。Athenianstatesman之前為甚麼不用the字？
請讀者先看看以下三個說法：（1）Demosthenes,anAthenianstatesmanwholabouredtoimprovehisskillsatoratory,would....（2）Demosthenes,theAthenianstatesmanwholabouredtoimprovehisskillsatoratory,would....（3）Demosthenes,Athenianstatesmanwholabouredtoimprovehisskillsatoratory,would....這三句文法都正確，只是意思稍有不同。第一句說anAthenianstatesman（雅典一位政治家），顯然認為讀者未必聽過Demosthenes的名字；第二句說theAthenianstatesman（雅典那位政治家），顯然認為讀者多半聽過Demosthenes的名字；第三句說Athenianstatesman（雅典政治家），意思和第二句差不多，但似乎假定讀者一般都認識Demosthenes。
新聞英語往往會把不用an、the等冠詞（article）的同位語（appositive，見昨天拙欄解釋）置於姓名之前，不用逗點，例如AthenianstatesmanDemosthenes等。這裏不妨再舉一例：DistinguishedpoetandprosewriterMr.YuKwangChungarrivedinHongKongyesterday（=Mr.YuKwangChung,distinguishedpoetandprosewriter,arrivedinHongKongyesterday著名詩人及散文作家余光中先生昨天抵達香港）。
