英王喬治四世一八二○年到一八三○年在位。他有一次誇口說，曾經命令一騎兵隊衝下魔鬼溝。那是蘇塞克斯郡布賴頓市附近一個峽谷。威靈頓公爵在旁，聽到國王的話，一點都不相信，淡淡的說：「那兒地勢陡斜得很，實在陡斜得很。」
【解說】今天，英文常用That'srathersteep、That'sabitsteep來表示某人所述難以置信，或所開價格太高，就是源出於這個故事，例如：（1）Thatisafinehouse,butthepriceisabitsteep（那房子很不錯，只是價格高了一點）。（2）Hegavearathersteepaccountofhisromanticadventures（他說自己的浪漫故事，誇張得難以置信）。
人家不是跟你說話，但你在附近無意中聽到，這叫做tooverhear（somebody/something）；假如是有心竊聽，則叫做toeavesdrop（onsomebody/something），例如：（1）Ioverheardtheargumentshehadwithherhusband（我無意中聽到她和丈夫爭吵）。（2）Howdareyoueavesdroponme?（你怎敢偷聽我說話？）留意overhear本是無心的，但假如有心聽下去，則和eavesdrop沒有分別。
