【解說】這是古希臘作家伊索（Aesop）的一則寓言。伊索的身世鮮為人知，《伊索寓言》卻名聞天下，是不少英文成語的來源。例如上文toputone'sshouldertothewheel一語，現在常用來說「努力工作」。Heputhisshouldertothewheel,andatlengthbusinessbegantopickup即「他努力工作，生意終於好起來」。Atlength二字合用，解作「終於」。
赫克力士是希臘神話裏著名的英雄。這位天帝之子力大無窮，曾奉命格殺巨獅怪鳥等等，所以，說力大無窮或任務艱難，英文常用herculean一字，例如：Itisaherculeantasktorebuildthetownafterthegreatearthquake（大地震之後，要重建這個城市，工作非常吃力）。
