有英文參考書說，Idon'tknowwhethertheyarenothere不可解作「我不知道他們是否不在這兒」。我看了全文都不明所以，請先生解釋。
這位讀者不明白並不奇怪。他示下的句子，我看了同樣莫名其妙。給英語國家的人看，保證也會莫名其妙。
英文學者葛傳槼一九五八年出版的《英語慣用法詞典》說，Idonotknowwhetherheisnotwell即「我想他身體大約並非不好」，Iaskedhimwhetherhedidnotknowher即「我想他也許認識她」，然則Idon'tknowwhethertheyarenothere應解作「我想他們也許在這裏」。不過，讀者請不要為這古怪句式費神，更不要學習。現實生活之中你不會碰到這些句子。
要說「我想，他身體並非不好」、「我想，他也許認識她」、「我想，他們也許在這裏」等，英文簡簡單單就是Idonotthinkheisunwell、Ithoughtheprobablyknewher、Ithinktheyarehere。沒有人會用葛傳槼說的whether句法。假如要說「不知道他身體好不好」、「不知道他是否認識她」、「不知道他們在不在這裏」等，那才用whether：Idonotknowwhetherheiswell（ornot）、Ididnotknowwhetherheknewher（ornot）、Idonotknowwhethertheyarehere（ornot）。
讀者說的那本參考書，也許是受了葛傳槼影響，否則未必會談到這種百年不一遇的句子。
