最近讀到一份講「休會」（adjourn）的文件，不明白以下句子：Themeetingshallstandadjournedtothesameplaceandatthesametimeonthesecondfollowingbusinessday/onthenextfollowingbusinessday。Secondfollowingbusinessday和nextfollowingbusinessday有甚麼分別？
香港英文公牘的一個弊病，是陳陳相因，於是前人犯的錯誤，往往成為後人模範。例如上述句子，根本不知所謂，怎麼還要學習？
句子大概是說「會議休會，至某工作天在同一地點、同一時間復會」。英文應說：Themeetingwillbeadjournedto（日期）atthesametimeandplace。會議紀錄習慣用過去式動詞，willbeadjourned可改為wasadjourned。
Nextfollowingbusinessday究竟是指哪一天，我不知道，因為這不是英文說法。Next和following是同義詞，「下個工作天」是thenextbusinessday或thefollowingbusinessday；nextfollowing兩字連用，就如「一個孤僧獨自歸」那樣疊牀架屋。
Secondfollowingbusinessday的second，大概來自中文「第二天」之類說法。但作者想說甚麼，我卻猜不到了。其實，會議紀錄最好把復會日期清清楚楚用數字寫出來，例如：Themeetingwasadjournedto25March2004（會議將於二○○四年三月二十五日復會）。要說翌日或兩天後復會，則可以說：Themeetingwasadjournedtillthefollowingday/fortwodays。
