Atotalof20peopleis/arenotfeelingwell（共二十人感到不適）這一句，動詞應用is還是are？
答案應是are。
Totalof和numberof用法相同。Anumber、atotal之後都用複數形式動詞，thenumber、thetotal之後則用單數，例如：(1)AlargenumberofnewspapersinHongKongareindirectlycontrolledbythecommunists（香港很多報紙都間接受共產黨控制）。(2)Thenumberofpeoplepresentwasthirty（出席者有三十人）。(3)Atotalof30peopleareexpectedtoturnup（估計會有三十人到場）。(4)Thetotaloffourandeightistwelve（四和八加起來是十二）。
上述原則，不少英語國家的人都未能掌握。CambridgeInternationalDictionaryofEnglishnumber條下例句就誤用了was：Atotalof21horseswasenteredfortherace（參賽馬匹共二十一隻）。第四版LongmanDictionaryofContemporaryEnglish則沒有錯：Atotalof13meetingswereheldtodiscusstheissue（這個問題共開了十三次會議討論）。
留意atotalof這三字用於句中，一般可以略去，例如Thereareontheshelfatotalof200books（架上有二百本書）一語，atotalof無非贅詞；但是，由於英文忌用阿拉伯數字起句，atotalof常見用於句前，例如：Atotalof200booksareontheshelf。這一句的atotalof假如略去，就應改為Twohundredbooksareontheshelf。
