一八六三年一月一日中午，林肯總統兩次拿起鋼筆，準備簽署面前的《解放宣言》，但又兩次放下筆來。他說：「我今天早上九點鐘開始，不斷和人握手，右手都麻痺了。假如簽名時手迹顫抖，以後審視這份文件的人就會說：『他有點猶豫。』」林肯說罷，拿起筆，小心翼翼在文件上簽了字。
【解說】美國總統林肯簽署宣言之後，全國奴隸即享自由。Emancipation一字源出於拉丁文emancipatus。據說，在古羅馬，孩子到了某個年齡，父親會象徵式拿起他們的手（manus）然後放開（ex+capere），表示孩子從此可以獨立，不受父親管束，所以emancipation有「解放」的意思，動詞是emancipate，例如：MikhailGorbachevwillforeverberememberedforhisemancipationof（或foremancipating）RussiaandEasternEurope（戈爾巴喬夫解放俄國和東歐的功業，將永留人心）。留意新中國的人民解放軍叫theChinesePeople'sLiberationArmy，不用emancipation一字。而我們被解放後，也和黑人不同。人家有投票權，我們要求投票則是叛國。
