貴欄說「我自薦做他的助手」可譯作Ivolunteeredtobehisassistant，但「自薦」不等於「不收錢工作」，volunteered會不會令人誤會是免費擔任助手？
首先須指出，「自薦」任職，固然不等於不收錢，但也不等於一定收錢。Volunteer也是一樣。《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》volunteer條下解釋是「自願地或無償地給予或提供」。英文學界奉為圭臬的TheNewShorterOxfordDictionaryvolunteer條下解釋甚至沒有提到「免費」或「無償」的意思：offerofone'sownaccordtodo（自願做）。工廠領班可以對同事說：Iwouldliketenofyoutovolunteertoworkthenightshift（我希望有十人自願上夜班）。這當然不是說免費工作。
Acitizenisadvisedtowearamaskwhenhehas（A）respiratoryinfections（B）arespiratoryinfection和Citizensareadvisedtowear（A）masks（B）amaskwhentheyhave（A）respiratoryinfections（B）arespiratoryinfection這兩條選擇題，答案是A還是B？
以上兩句，都是說「市民患呼吸器官疾病，應戴口罩」，答案選A或B都可以。第一句用arespiratoryinfection，指「患任何一種呼吸器官疾病」；用respiratoryinfections，則是指「患各種呼吸器官疾病」，重點稍有不同而已。第二句主詞Citizens是複數形式，配複數形式的masks和infections較好，但用單數形式的amask和arespiratoryinfection文法上也沒有錯。
