「自薦」英文是不是self-recommendation？
翻譯往往不可以固定以某詞對某詞，比如「自薦」，北京外國語學院的《漢英詞典》譯做torecommendoneself(forajob)或toofferone'sservices。但「我自薦做他的助手」一語，用這兩個譯法都嫌累贅，不如譯做Ivolunteeredtobehisassistant。非應徵而是自薦的求職信，譯做aletterofself-recommendation也不妥當，應說anunsolicitedapplicationletter：unsolicited直譯是「非應要求的」。「我自薦升職」，譯做Irecommendedmyselfforpromotion文法上沒有錯，但不如說Iputmyselfforwardforpromotion。總之，翻譯必須按文意選擇用語，不可一成不變。
「無奈」英文怎樣翻譯？
最近一、二十年，香港人喜歡文縐縐說「無奈」。這「無奈」也難有一個固定譯法。《漢英詞典》譯做cannothelpbut、havenoalternative和havenochoice，其中cannothelpbut不大妥當：cannothelpbut往往有「忍不住」的意思，例如Icouldnothelpbutlaugh是「我忍不住笑起來」，不是「我無奈笑起來」。「無奈」譯做helpless也可以。現試以孫悟空對佛祖說的一段話為例：「弟子無奈，只得投奔南海，見觀音訴苦。」這可以譯做IhadnochoicebuttogototheSouthernSeaandpouroutmygrievancestotheGoddessofMercy或Helpless,IcouldonlygototheSouthernSeaandpouroutmygrievancestotheGoddessofMercy。
