公元前四十九年，凱撒任高盧總督，接到政敵命令，要他交出兵權，於是決定進犯義大利。但他走到高盧與義大利本土之間的盧比孔河，卻猶豫起來。這時忽然出現一個大逾凡人的影像，直衝入河，涉水而過。凱撒認為那是上天給他的指引。他說：「骰子已經擲出了。」就率軍渡河。
【解說】在古羅馬，將領假如率軍渡過盧比孔河，即等於叛國。所以，凱撒兵臨河畔，也不免逡巡。他過河的故事，產生了兩句英文成語：tocrosstheRubicon和thedieiscast，意思都是：事情已無可挽回。例如：(1)WhenBushstartedsendingaircraftcarrierstotheMiddleEast,Irealisedthatthediewascastandwarwasimminent（布殊開始派遣航空母艦到中東，我就知道局勢已無可挽回，戰爭將臨）。(2)Ifyoudon'thelphim,hemaycrosshisRubiconintotheworldofdrugs（假如你不幫助他，他可能走入歧途，染上毒癮）。Somebody'sRubicon可以指「某人的重要決定」。
