英文bunch、group、crowd等表示「一群」的名詞，其後可用of帶出複數名詞，例如abunchofflowers（一束花）、agroupofpeople（一群人）等。假如做句子的主詞（subject），這類詞語配單數或複數動詞都可以，例如：(1)Abunchofstudentsis/arestayingbehind（一些學生會留下來）。 (2)Agroupofvolunteershas/havebeensearchingtheareafortheboy（一群志願者在這一帶搜尋那個男孩）。(3)Anotherbatchofpeopleis/arecoming（又有一群人來了）。HarryPotter那一句，也是用was、were都可以。
以abunch來說一群人，有英語學者認為不對，例如HNMacCracken的ManualofGoodEnglish即稱之為unacceptedcolloquialism（不獲接受的通俗說法）。也有學者認為「abunchof+不可數名詞（uncountablenoun）」是不對的，例如BergenEvans的ADictionaryofContemporaryAmericanUsage即以abunchofbaloney（一大堆廢話）為「絕對錯誤說法（definitelywrong）」。但名作家DorothySayersMurderMustAdvertise書中有abunchofclients（一群顧客）這說法，詞典編纂家SamuelJohnson也以abunchofimbecility（一團的低能）來批評董建華之類政府。可見bunch一字用法不無爭議。沒有爭議的，是用bunch來說一串的東西，例如abunchofbananas/keys（一串香蕉?鑰匙）。
