【解說】When、while解作「當」的時候，所帶出子句（clause）的「主詞（subject）＋be（包括am、was等be的變體）」往往可以略去，Whileservingasgovernor即Whilehewasservingasgovernor之略。這裏不妨再舉一例：Whentempted（＝Whenyouaretempted），youshouldnotsay,"Godistemptingme."（心生邪念時，不應說「上帝在誘惑我」）。留意when/while子句的主詞，假如和主要子句的主詞不同，則不可用上述省略法，例如WhileWilsonwasservingasgovernor,aNewJerseysenatordied一語，Wilsonwas二字不可省去。
