我的英文老師說，英文沒有ofanafternoon、ofaSunday這類說法，又說intheafternoon、inthemorning等之後不可用on帶出日期，例如不可說intheafternoonon2October，他的說法對不對？
Ofanafternoon、ofaSunday這些說法，英文是有的，通常是指一些習慣的行為，例如：（1）Ienjoydoingsomereadingofanevening（我晚上通常喜歡看看書）。（2）Whatdoyoudoofaweekend？（你週末通常會做甚麼？）留意of之後說日期的名詞有複數含義，例如ofanevening等於intheevenings、ofaweekend等於atweekends，但不能說ofevenings、ofweekends。
至於intheafternoon等之後，加日期是絕對可以的，例於「他七月二日晚上去世」，英文是Hediedintheeveningon2July（或ontheeveningof2July）。
我記得見過Allisnotgoldthatglitters一語，但英文老師說應改為Allthatglittersisnotgold，是不是我見過的說法錯了？
上述諺語，直譯是「閃閃發光者，未必盡黃金」，意思當然是凡事不可只看表面。金玉其外，未必不會敗絮其中。Allthatglittersisnotgold這說法，見莎士比亞《威尼斯商人》第二幕第三場，當然沒有錯；但Allisnotgoldthatglitters這說法，今天也很常見。陸谷孫的《英漢大詞典》就兩個說法都有收錄。那位英文老師是少見多怪了。
和Allthatglittersisnotgold同義的諺語有Appearancesaredeceptive（外表是會騙人的）、Neverjudgebyappearances（切勿憑外表下判斷）。從前孔子「以貌取人，失之子羽」，西方人也明白這道理。當然，明白是一回事，能不能夠躬行，完全是另一回事。
