Otherwise有兩個常見用法，一是作連接詞（conjunction），意思是「否則」，例如：Behaveyourself,otherwiseIwilltellMom（規矩點，否則我會告訴媽媽）。
Otherwise也可作副詞（adverb），意思是「不那樣」。這個otherwise往往可用另一些字取代，而這些字的意思則和句子前面所用的某些字相反，例如：（1）Thepolicewantedtohavehimcaptured,aliveorotherwise（警方要把他捉拿，是死是活都不要緊）。（2）Ithinkitistrue,butMarythinksotherwise（我認為那是真的，瑪麗卻不同意）。第一句的otherwise可用alive的反義詞dead取代，第二句則可用itistrue的反義說法itisfalse取代。
當然，otherwise有時不是一些反義詞語可以取代的。Heenjoysreadingpoetry,romanticorotherwise是「他喜歡讀詩，浪漫詩以至其他詩篇都愛讀」。其他詩篇不止一種，所以otherwise不宜用romantic的反義詞realistic（寫實的）取代。英文成語Somearewise,someareotherwise（有些人聰明，有些卻不聰明）以otherwise作文字遊戲（aplayonwords），而這個otherwise也不宜用wise的反義詞stupid（蠢）取代。有些人不聰明，但也不蠢。
