Itwasinthesefieldsthattheygrewtheirfood（他們就是在這些田野上耕種）一語，that可用where取代嗎？
Where是所謂關係副詞（relativeadverb），作用有點像that、which、who等關係代名詞（relativepronoun），可以代表前面的名詞，而where代表的名詞必須是個地方。例如Helookedatthehouse.Marylivedinit（他看看那房子。瑪麗住在這裏）這兩句，可以用where合成一句，以where代表房子，不用it：HelookedatthehousewhereMary lived。當然，正如拙欄多月前說過，這類句子也可用關係代名詞改寫：HelookedatthehouseinwhichMarylived。
Which、who這兩個關係代名詞，一般都可用that取代，但作關係代名詞的that，不可直接用在in、on等介系詞（preposition）之後，例如不可說thehouseinthatMarylived；把介系詞改置於句末，則沒有問題。換言之，英文也可以說Helookedatthehouse（that）Marylivedin。
由此可見，where等於inwhich或atwhich。說Itwasinthesefieldswhere...，就重複了in的意思，自然不正確，應改用關係代名詞that。
「It+be+片語（phrase）+that/who」是英文常用的強調句式，強調句中那片語，例如：ItwasTomthat/whobrokethewindow（打破窗玻璃的是湯姆）。這句式不會用where，所以讀者示下的一句也不可用where改寫。
