Iprefertostandratherthansit是「我寧願坐下」還是「我寧願站立」？
Prefer是「寧願」，指在兩個或多個選擇之中取其一。所取的事物，即作prefer的受詞（object）；所不取的，則用to帶出，例如：Ipreferteatocoffee（我愛喝茶多於咖啡）。
Prefer和to之後還可用動名詞（gerund），例如：Ipreferstandingtositting（我寧願站立而不坐下）。用「to+原形動詞（infinitive）」也可以，例如：Iprefertostand。但假如說Iprefertostandtotosit，兩個to字連用可不成，應把prefer…to改為prefer…ratherthan：Iprefertostandratherthan（to）sit。說Ipreferstandingratherthansitting也可以，但不可略去rather一字。
留意prefer本身就有「較喜歡某事物」含義，所以不可再用more（較為）、most（最）等字修飾。例如「你要喝茶還是咖啡？」英文可說Whichdoyouprefer,teaorcoffee?不可說Whichdoyouprefermore,teaorcoffee?
「寧願」的另一說法，是wouldrather，例如：Iwouldratherstand（thansit），wouldrather之後用不帶to的原形動詞，但也可用子句（clause），子句的動詞多用過去式說現在或未來的事，例如：Iwouldratheryoustayedheretodayandtomorrow（我寧願你今天、明天都留在這裏）。
