一位讀者來信，說在報上看到一句英文：Nowthatwedon'thavetheuncertaintyof1997,wehavetolookattheissueagainfromanewperspective。「請問nowthat和perspective是甚麼意思？」
Nowthat是連接詞（conjunction），可接連兩個子句（clause），有「現在既然」或「由於」的意思，例如：（1）Nowthattheyaremarried,theyarethinkingofhavingafamily（現在他們既已結婚，就有意生育兒女）。（2）Youmayaswellaskhimnowthathehasrecoveredconscionsness（現在他既已恢復知覺，你最好問問他）。留意口頭英語常把that字略去，例如說Nowtheyaremarried…等。
Perspective是「觀點」，例如：Youmustlookatthematterfromtheperspectiveofthepoor（你要從窮人的立場看這件事）。Perspective本來是指「透視畫法」，所以往往引伸為「通盤觀看」、「客觀審視」的意思，和介系詞in連用，例如：Seeninperspective,theso-calledterroristattacksarenottotallyunjustified（縱觀今昔，那些所謂恐怖襲擊也不能說是完全邪惡的）。
明白了nowthat和perspective，讀者說的那句英文就不難理解了：「現在一九九七年的疑慮已告消失，我們必須從新的觀點看這個問題。」
