一位讀者來信，說見過Thejudgeorderedthathereturnthehousetohisex-wife（法官命令他把房子交還前妻）一語。「為甚麼動詞return之前不用to，也不用過去式？」
按英文有一些表達要求、提議、命令等的動詞和形容詞，經常和that+should子句連用，例如：Thejudgeorderedthatheshouldreturnthehousetohisex-wife。那個should字美式英語往往略去，所以就有thathereturn這寫法了。
常用上述句式的動詞有advise、ask、beg、command、demand、insist、order、propose、recommend、request、suggest、urge等，形容詞則有advisable、anxious、desirable、eager、essential、imperative、important、natural、necessary、preferable、willing等。例如：（1）HeurgedthatI（should）startoffatonce（他促我馬上啟程）。（2）Itisimportantthatyou（should）startoffatonce。
這類句子還有兩點須注意。第一，be的變體is、am、was等一概不用，全用be，例如：Itisdesirablethatshebe（=shouldbe）givenagoodeducation（她應獲得良好教育）。
第二，否定式句子不用do字，例如：Isuggestedthathenot（=shouldnot）betoldaboutit（我提議不告訴他）。
