一位讀者來信，問「資源缺乏」英文是Thereis還是Therearealackofresources；另一位則問「計劃因資金不足而須押後」是Theprojecthastobepostponedforlackoffunds還是foralackoffunds。
Alackof（缺乏）、nolackof（不缺）帶出的名詞無論是單數還是複數，一律配單數形式動詞。「資源缺乏」是Thereisalackofresources，「資源絕不缺乏」則是Thereisnolackofresources。
Lack和education（教育）、knowledge（知識）等一樣，都是不可數名詞，也都可冠以a字。當然，我們不能說twolacks（兩個缺乏）、threeeducations（三個教育）等。
然則lack字甚麼時候才須冠以a？這只能按慣用法而定。有時，a字可有可無，例如：Theprojecthastobepostponedbecauceof(a)lackofresources。
Thereis之後習慣上會用a，例如：Thereisalackoffunds（資金缺乏）。
Lack之前假如有形容詞，也會用a，例如：Theprojecthastobepostponedbecauceofanunexpectedlackoffunds（由於資金不足非始料所及，計劃須押後）。
Forlackof（由於缺乏）則不用a，例如：Thousandsdiedforlackoffood（由於缺糧，死者以千計）、Theprojecthastobepostponedforlackoffunds。
