有兩位讀者先後來信，問even、evenif、eventhough的分別。
Even和evenif、eventhough的不同用法，三月八日拙欄談過了，現在只說evenif和eventhough。
一般而言，eventhough說的事實實在在，evenif則無非假設。比如說，你明知吸煙有害，還是不肯戒掉，應說Iwon掐quitsmokingeventhoughitisharmfultothehealth；但假如吸煙是否有害還未能證實，就應該說Iwon掐quitsmokingevenifitisharmfultothehealth。
論用法，eventhough頗像though或although，只是語氣較重。上文例句的eventhough就可用though或although取代。留意eventhough不可改作evenalthough。
Evenif和if則有不同。英文只可說Iwillquitsmokingifitisharmfultothehealth（假如吸煙有害健康，我會戒掉），那will不可用won掐取代。英文也不可說Iwillquitsmokingevenifitisharmfultothehealth，那will必須用won掐取代。
Evenif、eventhough之後，要加強語氣，可用still（仍然、還是）一字，例如：Eventhoughhisofferisverygenerous,Iamstillreluctanttoacceptit（雖然他的提議十分慷慨，我還是不願意接受）。
【補充】Deleteasappropriate即「按照所宜抹去」，approprate並非指「不適合之選擇」。
