一位中學生來信，問「那會議不重要，你可以不參加」英文怎麼說。他知道「可以」是can，「不可以」是cannot，「可以不」卻無法表達。
「可以不」不可以用can或cannot兩字表達，但可用need：Themeetingisnotimportant.Youneednotattend/Youdon'tneedtoattend。假如不用need字，用don'thaveto也可以：Youdon'thavetoattend。
留意neednot和don'thaveto雖然往往通用，但neednot的「不必」有主觀含義，don'thaveto的「不必」則是環境決定的。例如：（1）Youneednotworksohardtopleaseher（你不必那樣努力求她歡心）。（2）Youdon'thavetoworksohardnowthatyouhavecomeintoalargefortune（你繼承了大筆遺產，不必那樣努力工作了）。
Neednot（不必）的反義詞不是need（需要），而是must（必須），例如：（1）Themeetingisimportant.Youmustattend（那會議很重要，你必須參加）。（2）Youmusttakecare（你必須小心）。Must是「必須」或「一定要」，香港不少人卻把它當作「一定」解，於是往往錯用。「他一定會去」不是Hemustgo（他必須去），而是Hewillcertainlygo。

【補充】Favourite、favorite其實是同一個字。Favourite為英式拼法，favorite則為美式。
